Stromatopelma calceatum (Featherleg Baboon)
Stromatopelma calceatum, commonly known as the Featherleg Baboon, is a species of tarantula native to West Africa, particularly found in countries such as Ghana and Cameroon. It is named for the dense tufts of setae (hairs) on its legs, resembling feathers. This medium-sized tarantula typically has a leg span of around 12 to 15 centimeters. It exhibits a striking coloration, with dark brown to black hues on the body and legs, often with contrasting patterns. Stromatopelma calceatum is an arboreal species, preferring to dwell in trees and shrubs in its natural habitat. It constructs silk retreats among foliage for shelter. As nocturnal predators, they feed primarily on insects and other small invertebrates. Due to their potent venom and defensive behavior, they are best suited for experienced tarantula keepers.
